Xupetaworx 09 - A Brazilian story of Crankworx

by Raul Chavarria

Since 2007, DHBrasil.com.br - a DH/FR specialist website in Brazil - organizes a trip to the Crankworx. The trip was lovingly named Xupetaworx in that same year, and it is getting bigger each year since then. In 2009, between the middle of July and the end of the Crankworx in August, DHBrasil took 30 Brazilians to ride in Whistler.

This is a short story that summarizes our 18-day experience through Canadian lands.

A day from our destiny-
Xupetaworx's crew was formed by riders from all over Brazil, so this journey begins in different locations for each one of them. The gathering occurs in São Paulo, the biggest city in the country and where Air Canada's AC0090 departs from.

This is how you dominate an airport - in line at Sao Paulo's international airport

From São Paulo we need to fly 10,5 hours up to Toronto, where we immigrate. From Toronto we usually get a connection to Vancouver in less than 2 hours, but in 2009 a delay left us in Toronto for almost 5 hours. After the waiting, we headed to Vancouver on a 5 hour flight. From Vancouver to Whistler the path is worldwide famous : the Sea-to-sky highway. As we travel with almost 2 tons of luggage, we need to travel up to Whistler with a 58-passenger bus and a small truck, so that the bikes are all well taken care of during the trip. After 24 hours, the Garbanzo is the limit. Let's unpack and hit it!

Full agenda-
The trip is focused on delivering the best experience to all Brazilians that are on it. The guides have the mission to keep all the worries and concerns to themselves and let the riders enjoy the best bike park in the world.

In our busy agenda we spread out lots of activities during the two week stay in Canada. Here is what we did last year:

August 03rd - Day tour in Vancouver : visiting John Henry's bike shop, Cove bike shop and Robson Street for gifts.
August 4th to 9th - Riding, photographing and filming for DHBrasil.
August 10th - Coaching with Andrew Shandro and Thomas Vanderham.

August 10th to 16th - Enjoy Crankworx.
August 17th - Get back home.

I fully take my hat off the the Brazilian approach to whatever sport they are into. I used to work with surfers on the Australian junior tour down here and there would always be this van full of about ten crazy Brazilian kids - all living off about ten cents a day and hand outs - just frothing to surf. They never complained or blamed their 'lack of sponsors' for holding them back - they just went out there and blew their opposition away! Good on ya, guys and keep on charging.

ya dude i already have... and using mexican travel techniques. Which as it turns out originated from the circus and was just duplicated by mexicans for economical reasons. it seems they do this in all central american countries. i went to saint vincent and the grenadines and they fit our whole soccer team into a minivan. Cool if only they could package our snackfoods here in america! i bet it would save a lot of plastic...

@ VTwintips: Man youre a douchebag! Total A*hole.
Since when Brazilians "are nearly Mexicans"? Youre not just a a*hole, but also dumb.
No wonder the whole world hates Americans.

the worst part is that i'm not a racist where i come from. i am just jokes, stereotypes. some kids at our school jeezus christ. btw i agree completely with alllenrotstein. i know i am guilty but stereotypes are whats funny to me. i get stereotyped all the time, its just not bad. its when acts upon these prejudices begin, then its intolerable. thats discrimination.

The DH Brasil crew has it all figured out, they even partnered up with Air Canada so the riders have VIP treatment at the airports and don't get hassled with their bike boxes.

They even provide a custom made bike box for the kids on the trip.

I was not that motivated to go and clear 6 inches of snow and ice off the trails this morning, but I am now after watching that.
Great video guys, nothing beats riding with your friends and Whistler is the best place to do it for sure. Can't wait to go out there again.

Not thaaat much, but you have to consider that we our economic life is based on brazilian reals. Each canadian dollar can buy 1,7 reals.
Definitely would be better if we had our salaries in uk pounds! Smile

But the prices are fare, believe me.
